MAF Gainesville Meeting Notes

Attendees: Kem Magnant – Vulcan Materials, Jeremy Howard – Cemex, Chris Anderson – Cemex, Jerry Painter – Painter Masonry, Jim Allen – JAM Construction, Thomas Moss – Allan Spear Construction, Allan Spear – Allan Spear Construction, Eric Goettling – Van Goettling Masonry Inc.

Jim Allen – welcomed everyone to the meeting.
Jerry Painter gave an update of the long range planning committee. Jerry also talked about the new dues structure for masonry contractors.
Discussion was held on asking Chip Sykes to remain in the association and pay him a small stipend to call on architects and engineers in the Gainesville area.
Kem talked about the upcoming “Masonry Field Day”. The flyer was passed around and dates were discussed.
Jim Allen talked about the convention and distributed the MAF awards book.

This informative day of activities includes:

 Masonry Basics—Cement Plant Tour (1 Hour)
The plant tour begins with a visit to the quarry to view daily operations. Follow the aggregates through the
entire process of raw mix preparation, klinkering, finish grinding an shipment. A quick visit to the control
room and the quality control lab rounds out the tour.

 Concrete Block & Fire Safety (1 Hour)
(HSW Credit Qualified) Concrete Masonry Units—current ASTM specifications and how this affects the job
specs. This course will concentrate on quality masonry with an eye for moisture prevention and fire rating
determination of masonry wall design.

 Masonry’s Bag of Tricks (1 Hour)
Review each of the components of the masonry wall system. Develop an understanding of the different
components of the masonry wall system: Flashing , drainage systems and appropriate support, mortar properties
and how mortar affects the strength of the wall, etc.

Vulcan's Thompson S. Baker Cement Plant in Newberry, Florida is a state‐of‐the‐art facility that set a new standard for The North American cement industry in every respect, including the most stringent pollution controls. The tour of the Vulcan Materials Thompson S. Baker plant will include a visit to the quarry to view daily operations including: raw mix preparation, klinkering, finish grinding, quality control lab and control room.

Learning Objectives:
 Develop an understanding of the mining process by touring the quarry

 Establish a basic understanding of aggregates and their gradation

 Understand the process of taking raw materials through to a finished product Establish the Masonry Association of Florida as a resource for continuing education and technical assistance.

 Understand the basic testing procedures in the Quality Control Lab

 Develop an understanding of current ASTM guidelines for masonry production and how they relate to job specifications.

 Establish a basic understanding of quality masonry design guidelines.

 Understand the process used to determine the fire rating of a wall using the NCMA Fire Rating Calculator available online.

 Understand guidelines for proper cleaning and sealing of concrete masonry units.

 Develop an understanding of the different types of flashing and the pros and cons of the different products.

 Understand the concepts of a masonry drainage system and the appropriate products that support this system.

 Understand the proportions of proper mortar mixing and the importance of consistency. Review the role of each component of the masonry wall.
